Dr. Mehmet Ayhan Kuzu

I am currently working as a professor at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. I am married and have two children..

Education

I was born in 1963 in Ankara. Completed my primary, secondary and high school education at Ankara College of Turkish Education Association. I graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 with the highest GPA.

Work Experience and Training

In the same year, after completing the exams first, I started to work as a research assistant in the Department of General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University. Between 1991 and 1992, I worked as a general surgery specialist and research assistant in the Department of General Surgery at Leeds University School of Medicine in England. During the course of my stay at the University of Leeds, I learned surgical techniques used in the treatment of colon cancer. In colon cancer treatment, I learned new surgical techniques that prolong the patient’s healing and survival. In particular, I was working on intestinal cancer, inter-succinic resection, and colo-anal anastomosis techniques that would allow normal postoperative defecation rather than stoma. Additionally, I got important experience regarding radical lymphatic dissection for gastric cancer, ileal reservoir anal anastomosis (restorative proctectomy) for ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis (FAP – Polyposis Coli). I also studied laparoscopic techniques, which have been widely used in recent years and provide closed surgery for all abdominal operations, and at the end of the training, I was awarded the “Laparoscopic Surgical Training” Certificate at Leeds University. During the same period, I worked as a research assistant in the anorectal physiology laboratory, which evaluated the defecation functions of the muscles and intestines that control the breech region. During those times in England, I presented nine research projects in different international meetings. In 1993, I received the title of General Surgery Specialist. In 1998, I was appointed to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery as a specialist. In November 1999, I became an Associate Professor and got the title of professor in May 2005.

Publications And Research Projects

To date, 77 out of 152 of my articles have been published in various international journals. In addition to scientific papers, I undertook the duty of representing my country many times as an invited speaker and a panelist in international scientific conferences.

I prepared 10 different visual training materials distributed in Turkey and abroad for surgeons specialized and working in this field,

In the first training project titled “Total Mesorectal Excision – Autonomic Nerve Preventing Rectal Cancer Surgery”, prepared a training set using visual materials to educate surgeons in my country about the current approaches and techniques in the surgical treatment of colon cancer.

In the second project titled “Comprehensive Step by Step Rectal Cancer Surgery” consisted of three DVDs, run a set of rectum cancer training sets in collaboration with many international scientists..

I prepared a visual training material titled “Atlas of Colonoscopy” which was the third project about colonoscopy training and is used to evaluate the inner surface of the intestine that colon cancer is considered a preventable disease.

In the fourth project, run a training material titled “Living with Stoma Bag” for the training of patients and their relatives whose bowels were attached to the abdominal wall during the treatment of various diseases.

Within the scope of the fifth project titled “Robotic Single Docking Total Mesorectal Excision”, prepared it together with Amjad Parvaiz, a training set for the use of robotic surgery techniques in intestinal surgery is provided in the light of the latest developments.

Finally, I have prepared a training material called “Comprehensive Step by Step Optimized Colon Cancer Treatment ”with scientists from many countries for the current developments in the treatment of colon cancer.
